The Tarnier Institute
The Tarnier block marks the tip of a triangular urban system of public facilities dedicated to education, located in the heart of a leading hospital and university district.
The act of “revealing” – Designing from the existing
This means recognizing and bringing out the intrinsic qualities of what is already there; rediscovering the original nature and morphology.
Respecting the building’s original morphology
We positioned the functions requiring large spaces in Wing 1, where the primary structure is more regular and generous in size. In Wing 2, we prioritized smaller functions with non-modular dimensions.
Smooth and rational circulation
The original horizontal circulation – peripheral and more functional than the current layouts – has been reinstated on certain floors to accommodate large rooms.
Maximizing usable space for the Tarnier Institute for Women’s Health:
– new floors inserted at mezzanine levels
– rationalization of vertical and horizontal circulation
– densification of the small courtyards at lower levels
A unifying space. Level +1 and the garden:
– shared spaces positioned centrally across the various floors and directly connected to the garden
– the cafeteria, located between the entrance and the shared areas
– the multipurpose hall, near the central hub and garden entrance
An open urban block
The envisioned green atmosphere is intimate, calm, and enveloping.
Training and research institute. 29 independent housing units.
